In 1986, just three years after Hospice of Charles County was formed, the Friends of Hospice, a.k.a. the Society for the Friends of Hospice, organized to fill a pressing void. Hospice needed money to secure prescription drugs, medical supplies and equipment needed to bring comfort to chronically ill patients in Charles County. Its mission, therefore, was to raise funds and awareness for Hospice. Over the years, the Friends of Hospice have raised hundreds of thousands of dollars and have made impressive strides in spreading good news and good will for hospice programs and services. The organization is incorporated in the state of Maryland and is recognized as a 501 (c)(3) non profit by the Internal Revenue Service. Hospice of Charles County remains grateful for the unwavering support provided by this dedicated group of individuals and seeks to continue to partner with them to fulfill the mission of service to our community.
The signature event of the Friends is the Festival of Trees. This activity is held annually at the end of November and the funds raised are used to support patient care along and meet the general operating expenses of Hospice of Charles County. Other fund raising activities include, but are not limited to an Easter Egg Roll, concerts, direct mail solicitations and raffles.
The Friends of Hospice is managed by an active volunteer Board of Directors who meet monthly. The Board's activities are governed by its bylaws.
